I Am ...

Nar Martinez

A Human

One of the greatest compliments I've ever heard anyone give another was that they were a great human being. That deeply resonated with me. Isn't that the purpose of this experience we call 'life' ... to learn and grow and emerge as an integrated human being?

For many, their primary self-identification is with their race, gender, or sexual orientation. Others self-identify with their career or job, their marital status, their societal position, titles, or accomplishments. Many identify themselves by their belief system, religion (or lack thereof), or their spiritual practices.

Stripped of all these masks and illusions, we are but one thing: human ... we are remarkable, beautifully-flawed humans!

A Podcast Host

I initially entered the podcasting world in the 2009 with the Losing My Religion Podcast, to be followed by co-hosting the Outlaw Preachers Podcast. Sometime after that In engaged in a brief run with Narvana. Now, with renewed enthusiasm and much more experience under my belt, I am back with the Amazing Humans Being Show!

The common thread running through these shows is simple: People telling their stories. Years ago, my friend Brandon Mouser said to me: When people tell their stories, sacred moments are created. I have seen the transformational power of people sharing themselves and their stories with others. It impacts both the teller and the listener.

I am a great listener - at least that is what I have been told. I take great joy in getting to know people on a deeper level. I see myself as a collector, curator, and purveyor of these sacred stories and sacred moments. I know you're going to enjoy the guests on the show!

A Maker

I love to create! I love to make! Doing so brings me joy.

I view creating and making as deep impulses of human nature - and, in my cosmology - a reflection of our Creator.

I specialize in:

  • Spiritual Instruments, including Mala and Meditation Beads
  • High Vibrational Sacred Jewelry
  • Nature-based Pendants
  • Weaving and Wall Art
  • Dream Catchers
  • Clay Creations
  • Pyrography

There are two phrases I commonly hear from those who receive my creations: They are so beautiful! and I can feel their Energy! This humbles and pleases me.

Some of the people who enjoy my creations include: Nic and Annie Gregoriades, Mackenzie Astin, Alexander Shaia, Mike Morrell, Vanna Fox, Anita Grace Brown, Rob Bell, Xperience, and Macklemore.

Oh ... there's something else I love making: FRIENDS!

A Pastor

Many people know me as Pastor Nar ... not merely as a title, but more as a relational connection. As the word 'pastor' implies, I'm a servant and shepherd for the spiritual needs of people. I've done this in one form or another for more than half my life.

I came to faith - intellectually, at least - at a young age during the Jesus Movement in the '70s. Since that time, I've served in most every function and position in traditional and non-traditional church structures. My journey has lead me through many Streams within the broader Christian context.

As my dear friend Alexander Shaia has said: Christianity is my stage, but not my cage. This is true for me as well. My journey finally took me out of what most consider as 'church' - a weekly, structured gathering where people do religious things. While I left the building, I never left the calling ... or, rather, the calling never left me:

I pastor people.

Some of the people I pastor are Christians. Some are other pastors and leaders. Some are atheist or agnostic. Some are Witches, Wiccan, or Pagan. Some are Shamans. Some can't quite tell you what they are. I wouldn't trade my calling for anything!

A Shaman

Yes ... I am a Shaman.

Many have asked how I went from being a Christian Pastor to being a Shaman. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure that out myself! Right now I'm still retracing my steps ... and I'm finding them quite interesting. As I discover more of how this happened, I'll share it ... I'm just more interested in that it happened. I'm finding that being a pastor and a shaman are not mutually exclusive, but actually complement each other. I do think one of the pieces of this puzzle has been my life-long desire to follow Spirit wherever it leads.

I embrace the idea that Great Spirit has expressed itself at all times, in all cultures, and through all peoples.

Shamanism is, as far as we can currently ascertain, the oldest form of spiritual expression. It is the root from which all our major religions and spiritual practices have grown. From my experience, Shamanism has much to offer her offspring - even Christianity. The head of one of the world's largest denominations told me personally: Nar, the Church needs her Shamans back ... she needs her Shamans back! Other thought leaders in the Progressive Christian stream of spirituality have echoed, in their own words, similar sentiments. Such conversations give me hope.

A Healer

From my earliest of years, it has been important to me how people experience life - spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I cared. Deeply. I could feel their distress and wanted to help make it better.

Through the years I have engaged in a variety of healing modalities. These have included:

  • Being Present
  • Active Listening
  • Herbal Remedies
  • SacredTouch Therapy
  • Essential Oils and Essential Oil Massage
  • Guided Meditation
  • The Enneagram
  • Shamanic Journeying
  • Medicine Wheel Therapy and Ceremonies
  • Prayer and Laying on of Hands
  • Anointing
  • Sacred Plant Medicine
  • and, perhaps my greatest healing modality: HUGS!

My heart's desire is for people to experience healing, grow in wholeness and be fully-alive human beings.
